Behind the Scenes with Scheherazade: Capturing the Art of Dance

Filming dance is more than just documenting movement…

Filming dance is more than just documenting movement—it’s about capturing the essence of storytelling, the energy of performance, and the dedication of the dancers. Recently, I had the opportunity to work with Company of Dreams, an Oriental dance troupe led by Charlotte Desorgher, as they brought the captivating tale of Scheherazade to life on stage. This experience highlighted the artistry and effort behind every performance and how video can preserve the magic of a show that otherwise disappears once the curtains close.

Performance and Behind-the-Scenes Flexibility

For dance and theatre companies, having the right footage—whether it’s a dynamic behind-the-scenes look or the live performance itself—can be invaluable. I offer flexible services tailored to your needs, from multi-camera setups for capturing every angle of a live performance, to intimate behind-the-scenes interviews and rehearsal footage. This way, both the energy of the performance and the hard work behind the scenes are immortalised.

Why Video is Crucial for Dance Companies

In the world of dance, every show involves countless hours of rehearsals, intricate choreography, and emotional highs and lows. But after the final performance, all that’s left are memories—unless it’s captured on film. My aim is to provide dancers, choreographers, and directors with high-quality footage they can use to showcase their work, share with audiences, and even use in applications for funding. With Scheherazade, I focused not only on filming the show but also on creating mini-showreels for the dancers, giving them tools to promote their talent and artistry.

For the Future…

While Scheherazade presented its own unique challenges and opportunities, the experience reaffirmed the importance of having the right kind of footage for any dance or theatre project. Whether it’s a single performance night or a documentary-style film capturing the journey from rehearsals to final curtain call, I am flexible and happy to work with each client to tailor the content to their specific needs.
