Here’s the 7th video in the ‘Behind the Photographer’ series, shot during the #QuietLandscapes photography retreat with Margaret Soraya and Paul Sanders in Orkney.
The featured image here is a captivating photo by Bill Duncan, taken at the Churchill Barriers on one of the sunniest days imaginable for early March.
At first glance, I wasn’t immediately moved by the scene—the concrete blocks felt cold, aggressive, and harsh. The shipwreck was the obvious focal point, and my initial shots felt uninspired. But as I spent time in the space, walking around and really absorbing the environment, I began to see beyond the obvious. The shapes, patterns, textures, and even the decay told a much deeper story. The barriers turned into a playground of composition, perfect for black-and-white photography, where contrast and texture come alive.
