Behind the Scenes of a Body Confidence Workshop with Models of Diversity
The Brief
A dynamic and inclusive photography and video project aimed at boosting self-esteem for diverse individuals.
Models of Diversity needed to document their Camera Confidence Workshop for sponsors, showcasing a transformative day where individuals facing body image challenges could grow their self-esteem. The goal was to create a 3 to 6-minute, fast-paced video capturing the spirit of the event, featuring their transformation and personal growth.
Models of Diversity wanted a video that documented the entire workshop day, from the icebreakers to the final photoshoot. The footage needed to show the participants’ journey and the workshop’s impact, while focusing entirely on the attendees and their experiences. My role was to shoot behind-the-scenes footage and seamlessly integrate the final photos from photographer Ed Gregory, and vox pops from the social media team, ensuring the video captured the heart of the day.

The Approach
I focused on telling the story of the day, balancing the event coverage with details and personal moments. My approach centered on making sure every detail—from participant preparation to the final showcase—was captured authentically, as well as fitting in with the brand’s message of empowerment and inclusivity.

CONSULTATION
I worked closely with the client to understand the flow of the day and the key moments they wanted to capture. We planned for several key shots, including participant arrivals, icebreaker activities, guest speaker presentations, and behind-the-scenes footage of hair, makeup, and the final photoshoot.

PRODUCTION
On the day of the workshop, I captured key moments in a fly-on-the-wall style, focusing on natural interactions. Highlights included participants arriving, engaging in confidence-building activities, and undergoing hair and makeup transformations. The day culminated in a professional photoshoot where participants were coached on how to pose and feel comfortable in front of the camera. I ensured that the fast-paced nature of the day was mirrored in the energy of the footage.

POST-PRODUCTION
The editing process involved selecting the most powerful clips to tell the story of the participants’ personal transformation. The final video was upbeat, fast-paced, and showed the workshop’s progression. Soundbites from the participants expressing their newfound confidence were edited in, providing genuine testimonials. The video was designed to include everyone, celebrate who they were as individuals, and to inspire them to become models, if they wanted to.

After a morning of confidence building talks, the particpants were then treated to personal makeovers and a professional photoshoot in the studio with Ed Gregory.
There were two studios set up at 101 Studios so that every particpant could experience different lighting set-ups and poses as part of their confidence building day.
