The Big Film Photowalk: a record-breaking analogue occasion

May 21, 2024

What is The Big Film Photowalk?

Inspired by the success of Record Store Day, the aim of The Big Film Photowalk is to bring together hundreds of photographers—along with shops, labs, darkrooms, galleries, and workshops around the country— in a celebration of analogue image-making.

With more than 40 photowalks already planned across the UK and several more in the works – all starting at midday on the 29th June 2024—this is expected to be the biggest concurrent UK film photography walk ever! It’s being organised by Analogue Wonderland, in partnership with Kodak, plus a second Top Secret partner, to be revealed.

What is the Online Big Film “Photowalk”?

The Online (virtual) photowalk will run between 1:00 and 2:00pm on the same day. It will be run over a video call for you folks who are unable to join a physical photowalk, but would still like to take part in a photoshoot, perhaps explore something new, share what you love about analogue photography, and what you discovered about yourself or photography after this shoot. There will, of course, be a chance to chat to other film shooters, swap tips, and show what photos you shot with your film camera.

Who is the online photowalk for?

It’s for anyone at all who for whatever reason, can’t join a physical walk but who would love to take part in this event. Maybe you have a disability, or you’re just too far away from the nearest photowalk, or perhaps you’ve broken a bone, or you have arthritis, or you have to be in isolation. Whatever your situation, you’re welcome to join this group online ‘photo walk’ session.

You don’t need to be an expert photographer with a fancy camera (although of course,  you’re welcome if you are); you can be a beginner trying out film for the first time. All you need is to be curious about using film to find out more about (or reinforce) what you love about film photography.

So what does the Big Film photowalk involve?

You’ll need to sign up for the online photo walk in advance. Once you’ve purchased your ticket, Analogue Wonderland will organise sending your free roll of 35mm Kodak colour film out to you, a few weeks before the online photowalk. Then you can start shooting as soon you get it or when you’re ready. You’ll just need to send back your film by Wednesday, 19th June to get your scans back in time before 29th June 2024.

What can I take photos of?

The most important thing is to take photos of what you’re drawn to. There are hundreds of photography themes but here are just some to inspire you. Remember,  your ‘thing’ could be a blend of 2 or more.

1. Nature / Landscape

2. Street / Architecture

3. Portraiture / Animals

4. Still-Life

5. Miscellaneous

If you’re feeling undecided or don’t know where to start, don’t worry, I’ve been there too! Trying to find my photography ‘thing’ has probably been my life’s work…

If you’re interested, you can follow me on Instagram and Tiktok if you’d like to hear about my journey of ‘indecision’ and discovery, and my ideas on how to find your photography ‘thing’ and your own unique ‘style’.
