Wave watching at Marwick Head, Orkney with Richard Fray
It’s hard to believe I’ve only been back from Orkney for a month—our time there feels like a world away from what we’re living through now. This is the 9th video in the Behind the Photographer series, filmed during the Quiet Landscapes photography retreat with Margaret Soraya and Paul Sanders.
In this video, we follow Richard Fray (@richardfrayatgarvellan on Instagram) as he takes in the powerful waves at Marwick Head, near the fishermen’s huts and the Kitchener Memorial. The area’s dramatic coastline is full of surprises—the waves have carved the rocks into fascinating square and rectangular shapes.
I had such a hard time deciding which of Richard’s photos to feature in this video, so I ended up choosing two. The first was taken right where he’s standing in the video, and it captures the mood of the location beautifully. The second photo, taken further along the beach, had a striking and unusual quality that I couldn’t leave out.
Why visit Marwick Head, Orkney?
Marwick Head, located on the west coast of Orkney, is one of the most dramatic and breathtaking locations for both photography and wave watching. The towering cliffs, reaching over 250 feet, offer panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and are home to thousands of seabirds during the breeding season. The natural sculptures formed by the relentless waves create fascinating patterns in the rock, making it a prime location for photographers and nature lovers alike. For those with an interest in history, Marwick Head is also the site of the Kitchener Memorial, commemorating the loss of Lord Kitchener during WWI when HMS Hampshire was sunk off the coast. The combination of rugged natural beauty and historical significance makes it an unforgettable spot to visit.
